Former Jail Release Records

The Cibola County Detention Center at 114 McBride Road closed in 2017. It has no current inmate population, public release desk, or live roster. A page that still presents the address as an operating “Grants jail” conflicts with the current county detention page, which sends present detention inquiries to CoreCivic at Cibola County Correctional Center in Milan.

Closure does not erase a valid old booking. The county may retain a booking sheet, custody log, release event, photograph, or transfer entry. The court may retain the case register, order, judgment, or dismissal tied to that detention. Retention and public access are separate questions, and sealing, expungement, juvenile confidentiality, or a specific exemption can limit what is produced.

The site must therefore be treated as a historical records subject. It must never be named as the place to pick someone up, deliver property, ask about a present booking, or wait for a release.

Search Former Jail Releases

Start with enough detail to isolate the old event: full name, approximate booking range, case number, court, and any known booking number. Do not ask the county to search every record about a common name. A reasonably particular request improves the chance that staff can locate the correct McBride-era file and separate releasable material from exempt fields.

1. Confirm that the booking predates the jail’s 2017 closure and involved the McBride Road facility.
2. Search New Mexico Case Lookup by party name or case number.
3. Identify the court and read the register for release orders, bond changes, dismissal, judgment, sentence, warrant, or remand entries.
4. Request the underlying order or judgment from that court’s clerk when the docket summary is not enough.
5. Send Cibola County a written IPRA request for the booking sheet and custody or release log.
6. Ask whether the recorded event was community release or transfer, and request the receiving agency if one is named.

A court event and physical exit may not share the same timestamp. The court record states the legal action, while the jail log records the custody event. Compare both. A docket marked “closed” describes the case status and does not certify when a person walked out of the former jail.

Note: Use a date range in every historical request so county staff can separate a McBride booking from later CCCC custody.

Request Former Jail Release Records

The Cibola County transparency page identifies the public-records process and county custodian. IPRA means the Inspection of Public Records Act. Oral requests are allowed, but the law’s enforcement procedures attach to written requests. Give contact information and describe the records with reasonable particularity.

Ask for the nonexempt booking sheet, booking number, admission date and time, custody or release log, release date and time, release type or coded disposition, authorizing court or agency, and destination or receiving agency if the event was a transfer. Request the booking photograph separately if it matters to the record question. Ask that the county redact exempt parts and produce the rest rather than treating one restricted field as a reason to withhold the whole document.

The custodian named when departure was a transfer rather than community release.

Inspection should be immediate or as soon as practicable. If a record is not ready within three business days, the custodian should provide written timing information. The usual response is due within fifteen calendar days, though a broad request can take added reasonable time after notice. The published county form lists one dollar per ordinary legal or letter page or computer printout and no fee merely to decide whether a record is public. Confirm current charges before requesting copies.

Former Jail Records Contacts

The old jail has no current facility phone or records counter. Route county records through the county process and court documents through the clerk that handled the case. The Thirteenth Judicial District contacts distinguish District Court from Magistrate Court, both of which can appear in historical Cibola matters.

The Magistrate Court’s use of the McBride complex does not mean the jail reopened. Government offices can remain at a former correctional site after detention ends. The physical address must be paired with the office name and function.

Note: The Magistrate Court is a current office at McBride Road, but the former detention center at that address remains closed.

Current Cibola Release Custody Routes

A current local detention question should begin with CCCC intake at 505-285-4979. Ask whether the person is held, released, or transferred, and identify whether Cibola County, USMS, or ICE owns the custody. If a state sentence followed, use NMCD Offender Search. If federal designation followed, use the federal docket and BOP when appropriate. Immigration custody goes through ICE.

These channels should not be collapsed into one “Cibola inmate search.” The county jail route, two NMCD prison campuses, USMS contract custody, and ICE custody create distinct records. The current CCCC release page explains how to separate the three legal authorities inside that Milan building.

No official evidence shows that Grants or Milan operates a separate long-term municipal jail. The appearance of municipal courts on the county bond-routing page proves only that those courts handle their own matters. It does not create another current detention facility.

Mixed Custody Began After McBride

The closure of the county jail shifted current detention inquiries toward the CoreCivic arrangement. CCCC has historically housed Cibola County, USMS, and ICE populations in one building. Thus, a modern “Cibola County detention” record may belong to one of three legal custodians, while a pre-closure McBride booking is a county historical record.

A 2026 county vote about leaving a federal immigrant-detention agreement was a dated contract event. It did not prove that CCCC closed or that ICE could not contract directly with a private operator. That issue belongs to present CCCC and ICE verification, not to the former McBride jail. The closed facility cannot hold an ICE, USMS, county, or state prisoner now.

For a record that spans the transition, request the booking facility, dates, legal custodian, release type, and receiving agency. Those fields can show whether a person left McBride for the community, moved into the later CCCC arrangement, or entered another system.

Why McBride Listings Persist

The former jail’s address remains plausible because current county and court functions still use the McBride complex. Search results and commercial directories can copy an old label for years. A listing may show a real address yet misstate the agency, status, or service offered there.

Cibola County has a second naming trap. The men’s state prison once called Northwest New Mexico Correctional Center moved from private operation to NMCD in November 2021 and is now part of Western New Mexico Correctional Facility. That change is independent of the 2017 county jail closure. One site holds historical county bookings; the other holds state-prison records under NMCD.

Always pair a facility name with its street address, date range, operator, and legal custodian. That short check prevents the most common Cibola County locator error.
